I had the privilege of speaking at a professional event this weekend and connecting with dozens of individuals at the career clinic. Halfway through the day, I had a realisation. At our core, we’re all just trying to build a good life—pay our bills, enjoy meaningful moments, support our families, and reach our full potential. Nearly everyone I spoke to wanted the same thing: to grow, progress, and make the most of their abilities. But there was one common theme in almost every conversation—fear. More specifically, the fear of what others might think. “Who does she think she is going for that job?” “He’s going to fail at that.” “They’re going to embarrass themselves.” This fear is what holds so many people back. And it made me realise something—we are all, in some way, prisoners of other people’s opinions. Myself included. But here’s the truth: no matter what you do, someone will have an opinion about it. And you can’t stop that. Think about it—you have opinions about others too. Even about people you admire. It’s human nature. We process 60,000 thoughts a day, and we don’t control most of them. I thought if I just followed the right steps, I would finally find fulfilment. But here is what I learned: there are countless definitions of success out there, but they’re usually society’s definitions, not yours. If you’re chasing someone else’s idea of success, you risk sacrificing your own happiness to achieve something that might not even matter to you. So, ask yourself: - What do you really want from life right now? - What would fulfil you, not just make others proud? Success shouldn’t mean sacrificing your hobbies, passions, or unique talents for the sake of a title or someone else’s approval. I had an incredible session with a client yesterday! Even my cat Bruno was impressed by the insights we uncovered. She was feeling completely unmotivated to finish her Master’s and struggling to get any work done. Sound familiar? During our conversation, it became clear she had forgotten why she started her Master’s in the first place. You don’t know rejection until you have been rejected by a cat. This isn’t one of my usual post on instagram but it made my client laugh so I thought I’d share. Meet Bruno—my six-month-old kitten who is usually all about the cuddles. But not the other morning. I sat down with my coffee, ready for our usual morning snuggles, and Bruno? Completely rejected me. And I thought, “What did I do to upset the cat?” Later that day I had a coaching session and my client opens by saying she felt rejected at work. Two colleagues at work had declined her invite to connect over coffee. She has been working hard to increase her visibility and network in preparation for a new position. Since our last session, she had reached out to ten people in her company, and two had turned her down, saying they had heavy workloads. She had been mulling over this rejection for days. When we broke it down, it became clear it wasn’t personal. Her colleagues didn’t have the time, and she hadn’t done anything wrong. This kind of rejection will happen frequently throughout your career. And then I realised: my cat didn’t reject me because I’d upset him, although cutting back on his treats might not have helped. I recently had a session with a client who was struggling to find motivation for their goals. Confidence Doesn’t Make You Bad Yesterday, I had a session with a client who felt they lacked confidence in their leadership role. They often hesitated to speak up or share their opinions, and it was affecting them both professionally and personally. Interestingly, she came across as highly competent and knowledgeable, so I asked why she didn’t feel comfortable letting others see this. Her response was that she was afraid that if she showed confidence, others might think she believed she was better than them. What a breakthrough! She was holding back out of fear of being perceived as arrogant. This led us to an important discussion about confidence. You Are What You Think 💭 Have you ever wondered where your beliefs about money, relationships, and success come from? We learn and adapt these beliefs from the people around us, and they shape our lives profoundly. Science tells us that our lives are a reflection of our daily thoughts and beliefs, many of which are embedded in our subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind is incredibly powerful, processing information and influencing our behaviour without us even realising it. Neuroscientific studies show that the subconscious mind drives up to 95% of our decisions and actions, operating like an autopilot that guides our lives based on our deeply held beliefs. According to the law of attraction, the thoughts and beliefs we hold attract corresponding experiences and outcomes into our lives. If we constantly think about limitations and scarcity, we tend to attract those very limitations. Conversely, if we focus on abundance and success, we start to manifest those realities. What is the terror barrier? The terror barrier is that overwhelming fear you face when you are about to do something new. It is that inner voice that tries to convince you that you are not capable or worthy of doing the things you want to do. What happens when you hit the terror barrier? When you hit the terror barrier, you convince yourself to stay where you are so that you do not need to go outside your comfort zone. Let’s say you want to apply for a promotion. The new position would require you to do some public speaking which is a little outside of your comfort zone. Just before you apply you begin to imagine yourself having to speak in front of people. The fear overcomes you and you begin to tell yourself that you don’t need a new role, that you are happy with the money you are earning and that life is busy enough. This is the terror barrier taking hold and dragging you back into your comfort zone. How do you overcome the terror barrier? Start by recognising what is happening. You are experiencing these feelings because you are about to do something you have never done before or something you find fearful. This does not mean you are not capable of doing these things. You need to push past the fear to the other side. Set Actionable Goals: Based on your assessments, pinpoint the areas where you need to acquire additional skills or experience. Then, set clear, actionable goals to bridge those gaps. It’s crucial to remember that you don’t need to possess 100% of the required skills and experience to pursue a job opportunity. Even if you meet 60-70% of the criteria, go for it! At certain times in life, we will all experience a feeling of being stuck, whether it’s within our careers, relationships, or personal growth. Yet, these moments are not always negative, they signal the need for change. Personally, I’ve encountered these situations often throughout my life. It was only when I started viewing them as opportunities for growth and change that I was able to overcome those moments. The real challenge arises when we remain stuck for too long without taking steps to overcome it. Typically, this stagnation stems from two factors. Firstly, we fail to pause and reflect on our true desires. Whether it’s defining our career goals or clarifying our values, lack of clarity ultimately leads to feelings of being stuck. Secondly, fear often holds us back. Whether it’s fear of judgment or failure, these anxieties can be paralysing. Despite knowing what we want, we allow fear to convince us that staying where we are is safer, even if we are unhappy. This phenomenon, known as the “terror barrier,” is the moment we hesitate to pursue our dreams due to fear. To break free from stagnation, we must embrace these moments as opportunities for growth. By clarifying our desires and confronting our fears, we can begin to build a life and career that we find truly fulfilling.
